Responsible for optical illumination design and/or optical imaging system design and development. Familiar with Zemax as system design tool. Besides a good theoretical background also an experimental approach/attitude.

NATURE OF THE JOB
On the basis of his/her professional specialisation, makes a substantial contribution to the innovation of product and process. Designs new products, using the latest technologies and resources, often-realising systems based on unverified specifications.
Formulates assignments in dialogue with customer or user.
Analyses the problem posed in the assignment. Studies literature; develops ideas.
Assesses which aspects require further research and works out the form this should take (aim: to get to understand the essence of this, gather knowledge, and obtain an insight into the problems in order to be able, on that basis, to work on solutions and innovations).
Determines the research method and resources.
The emphasis in the job is on mastery of the professional field and shifting its frontiers

ASSIGNMENTS
Designs wholly new product or process or technology.
To this end, carries out application-centred research.
Realisation requires a theoretical and practical experimental search for right solutions.
The feasibility of the objective is not certain from the outset, and largely depends on the approach adopted by the jobholder. If necessary, the starting points have to be revised.
Formulates the provisional specification of the assignment him/herself, in consultation with the group leader, the commercial department and other interested parties.
Draws up the programme of activities for own area of responsibility.

PREPARATION
Analyses the problem posed.
Conducts preliminary studies, selects literature on basis of general familiarity with the professional field. Keeps abreast of developments within the field.
Seeks solutions; calculations; experiments; measuring; testing ideas; developing new techniques.
Researches application of new technologies /materials /raw materials.
Draws up the development programme with regard to technical-scientific, economic, mechanisation and planning aspects. Decisions have limited influence on strategic issues.

EXECUTION
Finalises development programs.
Assigns parts to staff and third parties.
Issues guidelines /information.
Seeks to interest professional specialists, internal and external, regarding their possible contribution.
Agrees with cooperating bodies on choice of resources /technologies.
Consults with group leader /interested parties on changes to specifications.
Bears responsibility for the execution of the programme.

REPORTING
Writes reports /articles.
At set times, gives a lecture on subjects in his/her professional field.
Communicates the results of his/her research, both internal and external.

CONTACTS
There is often international cooperation.
Seldom calls on the help of the management in connection with technical problems.
If required, seeks own contact with internal or external disciplines, research and suppliers in order to get to the bottom of technical problems.
Contacts require persuasive power, tact, and the ability to cope with controversial situations.
